During the Great Depression, a country musician arrives at his sister's home in Oklahoma, just as a huge dust storm hits. The musician is Red, on his way to audition for the Grand Ole Opry down in Nashville, Tennessee, but driving in the heat and dust has left him ill with tuberculosis, so his nephew Whit, seeing an opportunity to escape from life as a cotton picker, convinces his parents to allow him to go with Red, and the pair set off on an epic journey.
